The NCFR defines this content area as “an understanding of families and their relationships to other institutions, such as the educational, governmental, religious, healthcare, and occupational institutions in society” (ncfr.org).

I would define this content area as an understanding of the way institutions and culture influence families and individuals, and vice versa.

Education

Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

  • Studied a variety of cultures

Families and Diversity

  • Evaluated the effect of privilege and discrimination

  • Examined our personal experience with privilege and discrimination

  • Studied theories of empathy

  • Discussed various types of minorities and considered the experiences of people different than myself

Introduction to Sociology

  • Studied the origins, development, and affects of social behavior

  • Examined privilege

Experience

Mission trip to the Argentine District of Kansas City

  • Spent a week cleaning up an abandoned and vandalized community center with locals in hopes to one day have a functioning community center

  • Learned about the culture and history of the Argentine district
